February 19 - March 15, 2024 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

Black & White by Justin M. Kiska

Parker City, 1985 . . .

A picturesque spring morning takes a disturbing turn when the frozen body of a young woman is discovered in a field on the outskirts of the city. As Detectives Ben Winters and Tommy Mason arrive on the scene, they have no idea upon what type of an investigation they are about to embark. With no identification, no breadcrumbs to lead them to the girl’s origins, or even a cause of death, they face a daunting task ahead as they take on their latest case.

As the investigation lingers in limbo, a surprise revelation connects it to a mysterious chapter from Parker City’s past. One that Tommy's own uncle was a part of four decades early as a debonair private investigator working for the venerable Stride Detective Agency, tenaciously searching for the missing daughter of a former diplomat. It's a connection that binds two generations of detectives in an intricate web of intrigue.

In this captivating new installment of Parker City Mysteries, both investigations unravel simultaneously, forging an unbreakable link between the past and the present. As Ben and Tommy navigate their way through the case, they must confront the truth to a secret that has remained concealed for far too long.

Read an excerpt:

Stepping out of the car, the weather was so nice, Ben left his suit jacket laying on the backseat where he’d tossed it before leaving the station. But, as he always did when he was about to enter a new crime scene, he placed his hand on the Smith & Wesson on his hip. The weight of the cool metal helped to center him so he could focus on whatever he was about to be confronted by. It reminded him how important his work was and the duty he believed so much in. It was thinking like that that earned Ben a reputation of being a Boy Scout. An idealist who truly wanted to protect and defend the people of Parker City. He always wondered how some people could make that sound like a bad thing.

Some of the older members of the department liked to live in a gray area of the law, while Ben tried his very best to always do what was right. It’s when what was right fell into those gray areas that Ben needed to rely on his partner to help make sense of what needed to be done.

Trying to imagine what they’d been called out for he knew no two crime scenes were ever the same. Sure, elements could be similar. There was always a tragedy overshadowing them, but each was unique. Which is why Ben walked into each with a completely open mind and a keen pair of eyes trying to take in every single detail. It was always the details that cracked a case. Which meant one never knew how important the smallest piece of evidence could really be. If something was out of place, it was important until it wasn’t. That’s how he thought. And sometimes-and this was often the more confusing part-the absence of something was just as important. If not more.

“Not putting your jacket on?” The voice of Ben’s partner, Tommy Mason, came from the other side of the car. “I didn’t realize this was a casual crime scene.”

Ben raised an eyebrow and shook his head.

The two were always picking on one another. It’s what they did. It’s what made their friendship so strong. When it came to what to wear as police detectives, there was a continuing debate between the two. Ben felt a suit and tie was most appropriate. Not only did it look more professional and attract a certain level of respect but, with his clean-cut babyface, it helped him look a little older than his thirty years. Though not much. Tommy, on the other hand, saw nothing wrong with wearing jeans and a T-shirt under a leather jacket. While he looked like a cop on one of the popular crime shows on television, Ben always pointed out that that was Hollywood’s version of a police detective. Since Ben technically was his supervisor and commanding officer, Tommy begrudgingly put a tie on every morning. Most days though, he usually left it loose with his collar wide open. Ben still took it as a victory.

Blowing a cloud of smoke into the air, Tommy dropped what little remained of his cigarette on the ground and stamped it out before taking his corduroy jacket off and tossing it back into the car. If Ben didn’t have to wear his jacket at the crime scene, he sure as hell wasn’t going to wear one.

“Doesn’t this feel much less constricting,” he asked with a grin. “And it’s so much easier to get to our guns in the event we’re in danger.”

“Shut up,” Ben said as he started toward the cluster of men in the field.

“I’m just saying. If your life was in danger, it would be so much easier for me to shoot someone to save you–which you know I would do–if I didn’t have to worry about my jacket getting in the way. Those few precious seconds could save your life one day. Natalie would agree.”

Stopping and turning to look at his partner a few steps behind him, Ben asked, “Why exactly do you think it would have to be you saving me and not the other way around?”

“Because that’s just the way it is,” Tommy answered very matter-of-factly. “Think about how many times I’ve saved your life?”

Ben’s forehead wrinkled, a puzzled expression appearing on his face. “What the hell are you talking about? I’m the one that saved you at least two times that I can think of in the last year alone.”

“Clearly we remember things very differently.”

“You’re a pain in my ass. You know that, right?”

Smiling the thousand watt smile for which he was known, Tommy answered, “I like to think that I keep you grounded.”

So was the way of Detectives Ben Winters and Tommy Mason. More often than not, they sounded like an old married couple bickering about one thing or another. Completely devoted to one another, they were closer than brothers. They’d grown up together, gone to school together, joined the academy together, and when the order was given for a new Detective Squad to be created within the Parker City Police Department, they were tapped for the job.

As it was, for the last four years, they were the only two members of the department’s official criminal investigation team. Though Parker City was by no means a hotbed of criminal activity, they’d been involved in several major investigations which rocked the city. Two of which even attracted the national spotlight, making the pair famous for a few minutes. Most police officers could go their entire careers without being involved in the types of cases which had kept them up at night, but the two young men had earned their detective shields through trial by fire.

Catching his foot in a clump of thick weeds, Ben knew if he tripped and landed in the dirt, Tommy would never let him hear the end of it. Thankfully, he was able to quickly regain his balance and keep himself upright.

His hope that Tommy didn’t see the awkward contortion the lower half of his body performed to avoid hitting the ground was dashed when from behind him he heard the sarcasm-laced comment, “As graceful as a gazelle.” Which was then followed almost immediately by the unmistakable sound of something hitting the dirt. Hard.

“Sonofa…”

Ben turned in just enough time to see Tommy jumping to his feet and dusting off his pants.

“Not a single word,” Tommy admonished, vigorously shaking his head. “I’m well aware Karma’s a bitch.”

Deciding to take the highroad, Ben valiantly stifled the laugh fighting to burst free.

“You’ve got a little bit of something there on your…” Ben started, pointing to his partner’s pant leg.

“Shut it!” Tommy said. At which point Ben couldn’t contain himself. The laughter won and overpowered him.

As the two detectives reached the other men standing in the field, they recognized one of the patrolmen as a new officer who’d just recently joined the department and the other was one of Tommy’s least favorite people on the planet, Buck LuCoco. An overweight, lazy throw-back to the days when the police in the city did as little as they needed to. Neither Ben nor Tommy understood how he was still on the force. Or why he wanted to be with his attitude.

“LuCoco, Brown,” Ben said giving the uniformed officers each a quick nod of his head.

“How is it, Buck,” Tommy began, “whenever a body drops in this town, you’re the first man on the scene?”

“Just lucky, I guess,” LuCoco said, mopping his sweaty brow with a wrinkled handkerchief from his pocket. “It could also be that the scumbags in this city do their dirty work at night and since I’m the first one outta the door in the morning, I get the call. Either way, it’s crap. I tell ya!”

“Being that it’s after lunchtime already–,” Tommy began to say before Ben placed a hand on his arm, giving him the signal to let it go.

Then, turning to the younger officer who appeared quite eager to give his report to the department’s chief detective, Ben asked, “What have we got?”

“This is Sam Ruppert,” Brown introduced the man, referring to his notebook. “He’s one of the city’s engineers. He was doing some routine work out here this morning when he found the body of a young female. D.O.A.”

Turning to Ruppert, a tall, beefy guy in a flannel shirt, jeans, and work boots, Ben took his own notebook from his shirt pocket. “Morning, Mr. Ruppert. I’m Detective Ben Winters. You’re with the city?”

“Public Works Department,” he said in a gravelly voice. “Almost fifteen years now.”

“What brought you out here today?”

“The city’s getting ready to do some work in this field and I needed to take a few quick measurements. We’ve been out here every day for the last week. I thought I’d be here and gone in a few minutes. Then I found…” His voice trailed off as he looked away toward something another twenty or so feet away.

“What did you find?”

“A body. She wasn’t there yesterday. I know that for a fact because I was here all day with a couple other guys. We were all over this place. We’d have seen her for sure.”

Pointing at the mound the engineer was staring at, Tommy asked, “Is that the body?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Did one of you cover her up or did you find her like that?” Ben asked, referring to the tattered, green checked blanket.

“She was like that,” Ruppert said taking a deep breath. “At first, I thought it was someone in a sleeping bag or something. Thought maybe they’d slept out here last night. Sky was clear. They could see the stars. But when I got close and hollered, there was no… She didn’t move. When I got up close I saw... Geez. I’ve never seen anything like it. This isn’t how I thought my day was gonna go.”

Other than the occasional funeral, it was true, the average person didn’t have much exposure to dead bodies. But there was something in the way the man was acting that made Ben think there was more to the story. He was too shaken up. If one could be too shaken up after finding a dead body on the job.

“What is it you’ve never seen before?” Ben inquired, interested to hear the conclusion to Ruppert’s story.

“Oh, I think you should just see for yourself, Detective” LuCoco said interrupting, a twisted smirk on his fat face.

“What is it, LuCoco? Just tell us.” Tommy had no patience for the man. There was a time he used to hide his contempt, now he didn’t even try. Not that LuCoco was very observant. Or he just didn’t give a damn.

“Sirs,” Officer Brown interrupted, “let me show you.”

Walking the group over to the covered body, Brown knelt down and, using a handkerchief he’d had in his pocket, pulled the blanket back revealing the naked body of a beautiful young woman with dark wavey hair. But something wasn’t right. Not that the naked body of a woman in the middle of a field was right. But in this instance, it was her skin.

“What the hell?” Tommy’s reaction matched what Ben was thinking. “She’s blue.”

Blue wasn’t entirely accurate, but it was pretty close. The skin was a pale hue, almost white. And there was a frosty sheen to it, with small ice crystals visible around her eyes and mouth. Little droplets glistened on her eyelashes.

“She’s frozen,” Brown said, looking up at the detectives.

“It was cool last night,” Tommy said, kneeling down himself to get a better look, “but not cold enough to freeze to death.”

“No. I mean, she’s frozen like a block of ice.”

Title: The Land Girl on Lily Road

Author: Jillianne Hamilton

Genre: Historical Romance

About The Land Girl on Lily Road:

Bravery and fortitude on the English homefront endure in this lighthearted, enemies-to-lovers WWII romance, perfect for fans of The Wartime Matchmakers and Dear Mrs. Bird. Expecting a relaxing getaway at her family’s summer estate, pampered socialite Elsie Foster-Quinn signs up for the Women’s Land Army. When she ends up at a Somerset dairy farm instead, Elsie immediately butts heads with the grumpy farmer she now works for. Being a land girl in a small town is far more than the city girl bargained for. Ben Grainger hates asking for help. When two land girls unexpectedly arrive on his farm, he quickly learns he can’t simply make them go away. He finds amusement in tormenting Elsie whose privileged life certainly didn’t prepare her for farm life. However, nothing could have prepared Ben for the feelings that suddenly emerge whenever the haughty little princess is near. Why can’t he keep his eyes off her? And why can’t she stop thinking about him? Opposites attract—but is it true love? Between the Germans bombing nearby Bath and a deadly disease rampaging through local farms, Ben and Elsie’s trust in each other is put to the ultimate test.

Excerpt:

That night I got home late after a few drinks and a game of darts with Amos at the pub. The cottage was dark and quiet. I slipped my shoes off by the door in the kitchen and gave Sam a quick pat as his tail thumped against the floor.

As I passed through the living room, I heard something that made me stop—quiet inhales and exhales coming from the armchair. I silently turned on the tabletop lamp at the end of the couch and smiled at the sight of Elsie sleeping in the chair in her dressing gown, a blanket wrapped around her, and my well-worn copy of Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie in her lap. She was a few chapters into it already.

“Elsie,” I murmured. “Elsie?”

Her eyes opened faintly before falling shut again.

Sighing, I relocated the book to the table and switched the light back off. Made bolder by beer, I carefully slid my arms beneath her small frame and peered down at her peaceful, slumbering face as her head fell limply against my shoulder. Avoiding the creaky spot on the bottom stair, I carried her upstairs, making sure to not bump her head as I maneuvered her down the hall and into her room. I thought she might be able to feel the frantic pounding of my heart but she didn’t stir.

As I slowly lowered her down onto her bed and pulled my arms from under her, she opened her eyes again and gazed up at me from beneath heavy lids.

“Hi,” she whispered.

“Hi. Go back to sleep.”

Soon her eyes were closed again and her shallow sleepy breaths returned to their previous rhythm. Cautiously closing her door as I left, I went next door to my own bedroom. I sat on the edge of my bed and stared at the wall, a fervent realization shaking me of all the warmth and comfort of exhaustion and alcohol: if I didn’t soon tell Elsie how I felt, I would go mad.

Blog Tour ~ Invocation - Days of Iron & Clay: Book One by Aileen Erin

Invocation
Aileen Erin
(Days of Iron and Clay, #1)
Publication date: March 19th 2024
Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult

From USA Today Bestselling Author Aileen Erin comes an all-new action-packed, romance-filled paranormal series.

There are three things I know without question.

One: demons are real.

Two: humans make awful mistakes that get them in demonic trouble more often than you’d think.

And three: I’m the only one who can help them.

I straddle the line between the mortal and spiritual realms every day. People might think they’re two different places, but they’re not. They lay on top of each other. It’s messy, and that’s why so many people need my help. Since I was little, I’ve been called all kinds of names—unusual, abnormal, even insane. Which is fitting, since they keep throwing me in to mental facilities. I’ve been in and out of them my entire life.

But no matter what people say, no matter what I’m risking, I will always help those in need.

Because there’s an endless war carrying on all around us, every minute of every day. One that can’t be seen by mortal eyes. But I can see it, the spiritual battle for mortal souls, and I’m working hard to make sure my father is on the losing side. He — Astaroth, Satan’s general— is why I can do this. He’s why I’m not normal. I can’t have friends, a life, or a boyfriend. I won’t be selfish enough to drag someone into this fight. But I’m not lonely. Not exactly. I have my mom. She’s my rock, my best friend, my partner. She helps me do what needs to be done, and she’s never afraid when it feels like I’m always afraid.

Because I hear my father whispering my name each night, his taunts echoing through the spiritual realm. He’s hunting me, and I know the day will come when I must face him again.

Every portal I open could be the one that finally pulls me back to Hell, and I wonder if I will brave enough, strong enough, good enough to fight him.

My name is Samantha Catherine Lopez, and I am Nephilim. This is my story.

**Fans of the Alpha Girls series will love this new series set in the same world, with a few familiar faces, but you DO NOT have to have read a single word of the Alpha Girls series to enjoy Samantha’s story.

Excerpt:

Gabe threw me to the ground and slapped a hand over my mouth, cutting off my scream. We were both in spirit form now, and he felt so real.

This all felt so real.

“Stop it,” he whisper-yelled as he hovered over me. His eyes were different here, brighter. And his aura was darker. Darker than I remembered it being, as if it were eating all the light around it. “Remember what I said. No talking. You’ll get us caught. There’s no one who can save us from this place.”

He was right. I knew he was right. But I couldn’t stop the panic.

I hadn’t been back here—not fully, not for longer than a minute—since I escaped all those years ago. I’d been back to pull souls out, but not like this. This was so much worse.

I’d never recovered from the trauma.

I’d been here for a mortal year, but it felt like a millennium. It aged me beyond my peers and taught me a lot about myself, but the cost…

Nightmares, flashbacks, freak-outs with my powers, and I still had problems with all of it after eleven years.

And I’d vowed to never come back.

Yet here I was.

Pinned to the fire-hot ground in Hell.

Excerpt:

Recently, I watched a news clip of Good Morning America in which Selena Gomez was interviewed about her mental health journey. She, her mother (Mandy Teefey), and Ms. Daniella Pierson founded a website called Wondermind (https://www.wondermind.com) with the desire to help others achieve mental health. I cannot honestly say I endorse this site as of this moment because it’s too new, but I applaud their noble goal of creating “a world where caring for your mental health is democratized and destigmatized.”

The key and powerful words/concepts to emphasize here are “democratize” and “destigmatize.” Mental pain is invisible, yet real. We seek to strengthen physical health; why not treat our mental health the same? If society could embrace the ones suffering from mental illness, those who bear the mental and emotional pain would not have to feel like covering it up and going through the pain silently and alone. Don’t you think so?

In part 1, I will highlight adolescents’ most common mental challenges: depression, anxiety, disordered eating, addictions, and some related conditions. For anyone struggling with mental health issues, please seek help. Whatever you’re going through is not your fault, and you are not alone.

If you know someone in a difficult situation, give them encouragement, love, and understanding. Your kind support may rescue someone on the verge of hurting themselves.

In an interview with Juju Chang of ABC News for the episode of Good Morning America, Selena Gomez, her mother, and Daniella Pierson talked openly about their journeys with mental illness. The key messages are:

Let us all talk about our mental wellness as much as we talk about our physical health. That can be translated as “we should be working on our mental fitness just like you work on your physical fitness.”

It’s okay not to be okay.

Stepping away from Instagram for four and a half years detoxed Selena Gomez’s life; it made her happier, more present, connect more with people, and feel normal.

In 2020, Gomez was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The information about her diagnosis made her feel free and happy and helped her develop a relationship with herself.

Her mother advised other parents on how to help a mentally ill child: with love and understanding.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

“You came here for a reason. What do you want?”

“You should take a seat for this,” Annabelle said, waving toward his leather chair. She spoke in a lowered voice. Her seduction voice—low and throaty and bringing back memories that lashed his skin with heat.

His eyes narrowed in distrust. “Why do I need to sit down?”

“I’m not sure you’ll like what I’m about to say.” She gave a careless, one-shoulder shrug.

“Tell me so we can get this meeting over with, and I can go back to more important tasks, like practicing my golf swing.” He glanced at the Patel Philippe watch on his wrist. “You have sixty seconds to explain why you’re here, and then I’m calling security to escort you out.”

She let out an exaggerated sigh. “Fine. I have a proposition for you.”

“I cannot wait to hear it,” Dante said in a dry voice.

Another fake smile. “My father plans to step down as the CEO of Buchanan & Buchanan within the next few months.”

“Time is ticking. You have twenty-seven seconds.”

“Be patient, darling. I promise you’ll want to hear this,” she said, strolling over to the bar where he kept beverages for guests. She poured herself a glass of water and took a sip before turning to face him.

“Seventeen seconds.”

Annabelle arched an eyebrow. “When he steps down, he plans to recommend a merger to the board—a merger with his friend’s company, Strong Technology, Inc. They’re a privately owned firm specializing in smart home technology to modernize residential properties and make them more efficient. Daddy has threatened to go through with this merger for years.”

“What does that have to do with me?” Dante tapped his watch as a reminder.

“Nothing, directly.” Annabelle finished the water and carefully placed the glass on a silver tray atop the bar. “Except for the proposition I mentioned. Instead of merging the companies and having Albert Strong take over as CEO, I want Daddy to recommend me as CEO to the board, but unfortunately, he won’t because of his traditional values.”

A brief flash of pain zipped across her eyes, so fast he almost missed the emotion.

“That’s your problem. Again, what does your father’s decision have to do with me?”

She looked him squarely in the eyes. The haughty indifference disappeared, and a tough negotiator took its place. “My father admires and respects you. He thinks you’re a great businessman because of all you’ve accomplished in the ten years since our divorce. You’ve made quite a splash in the commercial real estate market. Therefore, my proposition is simple. I want to take over my father’s company, and I need you to help me make that happen. I’m proposing that you and I remarry.”

Dante cocked his head toward her in disbelief. “Excuse me, I misunderstood what you said. My English is not so good.”

“Your English is excellent. Probably better than mine at this point, so I know you understood perfectly what I said. I’m suggesting we get married again—a marriage of convenience, if you will. A mutually beneficial arrangement for both parties, you and me. My father will be happy to have you back in the family because he did like you, and now he has newfound respect for you thanks to all your accomplishments. Based on a conversation we had, I’m convinced he would recommend me for the CEO position if he thought you’d be involved in helping me with B&B, as needed. Our marriage would be temporary. Sometime after I take the reins of the company, you and I will have an amicable divorce. Not right away, of course. We want our reunion to be believable, but we simply split because we couldn’t make our marriage work for a second time.”

Dante folded his arms over his chest. Unbelievable.

“Your plan is to remarry and trick your father into believing you and I are happily married, so he will hand over the company to you when he steps down? That’s your plan?”

She smiled brilliantly. “Yes.”

“Ah querida, t’eres loca,” Dante said.

Then he burst out laughing.

Whoever thought an astrologer's life could be so dangerous? Especially when you're "Hollywood's Astrologer to the Stars." Yet he once crawled out on a 20-story beam to talk down a suicidal celebrity. And when he gave a Vegas casino owner a costly piece of advice, he found himself the target of a hitman.

Fortunately he escaped only to face another crisis: the kidnapping of Sparklynn James, his most famous client. After the Feds falter on the case, the family asks him to assist Rebecca Fairway, a publicity-seeking P.I. (a.k.a. "The Glamorous Gumshoe) to find her. Not exactly the A Team.

But a coded ransom message from Sparklynn herself points them in the right direction...leading them straight into a web of corporate evil.

Chapter 1

Looking back, I suppose you could say I got to North Carolina by way of the Hollywood Freeway. Actually, it was all Nigel’s fault. He’s the one who told me to use the Alvarado entrance, which proved a perfect location to spy on cars entering this famous roadway.

Nigel was the GPS guide on my mother’s beloved Lincoln Town Car, and just for old times’ sake, I used him instead of my iPhone for guidance. But because of him, I nearly got my temporal and parietal lobes parted by a bullet. Muscle control and memory are governed by these regions, so it’s not something to take lightly.

My mother liked Nigel for his “refined” delivery. And, indeed, he seemed a prince of a fellow—charming, urbane, and of course, very proper. I imagined him ensconced in a large wingback, clad in a silk smoking jacket and ascot.

“Proceed seven miles to U.S. Highway 101,” he said as I eased into the flow of traffic. “Smashing idea, Nigel,” I said. “We’ll give it a go.” And just like that the die was cast and, my future was determined by this little Brit deep inside the dashboard .

The car had served my mom well for years, but now she was living in a retirement home, and I finally persuaded her to sell her beloved “Black Beauty” as she called it.

“You will be careful with it, won’t you?” she said.

 “Mom…”

“You know what I mean, son.”

Unfortunately, I did: my atrocious driving record as a teen. Before the age of nineteen, I’d managed to mangle, maul or completely total three cars, including a rental. But that was years ago. Today I was a responsible adult, a preferred risk according to my insurance company. I was perfectly capable of driving Black Beauty the twenty-six miles to a car auction where collectors would get the chance to bid on one of the largest cars in the Free World—the only one with a Rolls Royce-style grill.

So, there I was, tooling down the Hollywood Freeway, enjoying a pleasant fall morning, not particularly aware of the 4Runner that was lurking behind me since Alvarado. Suddenly there was a sharp, popping sound, or maybe a crack. About the same time, I noticed a funny little hole in the dashboard, perfectly round with a curl of smoke rising out of it.

Holy shit, someone was shooting at me!

Probably a crazy sniper or one of those homegrown terrorists I’m always reading about. I sped into the thickening traffic of the downtown area, hoping to get out of his range. After several miles I began to feel safe, but when I glanced at my side mirror, there it was again. Worse yet, I spotted a familiar face poking out of the passenger window and my blood froze. Carmine! That bullet wasn’t random. It was meant just for me.

Several months earlier I provided casino owner Milo Karp with a bad piece of astrological advice, and he apparently took it personally. I gave a thumbs-up on his newest property but not without considerable concern. For one thing, Milo was a Scorpio, and as I tried to explain to him, shit happens to Scorpios this time of year. It’s a period of volatility, thanks to a new moon plus some Mercury-Venus friction. But Milo is a skilled businessman with years of experience battling unions, contractors, sub-contractors, and agents. Me? I was just an astrologer.

Well, not just any astrologer. I was, after all, last month’s six across on People magazine’s crossword with the clue “Hollywood’s astrologer for the stars.” I had big name clients like Sparklynn James, one of the most talented performers of our generation, and whose career I helped to launch. There was also the hulking Rowdy Gold of Too Tough To Kill fame and TV star Quinella Cardwell, a surgically fortified beauty. Also Mister Pister, a respectable rapper, if there is such a thing.

I knew Milo because Vegas casinos bring in a lot of Hollywood talent to do shows and he eventually became one of my clients. He was difficult at times with a bad temper, but I never thought he would send someone to hunt me down on the freeway like a gazelle on the Serengeti Plains. But hunt me he did. Carmine was his strongman and the driver a young guy, an apprentice thug perhaps, and their mission seemed clear.

Death was riding on my rear bumper.

I wondered about the odds of an old parade float outrunning a nimble 4Runner? The SUV could corner on a dime. The Lincoln required big bills and made you wait for the change. In this kind of situation, it was little more than a rolling coffin. Icy terror shot through my veins.

Whap! A second bullet slammed through the car, catching the top of the passenger window. Another hole, perfectly round. I pressed hard on the accelerator and the 460-cubic-inch engine responded. The pride of Detroit wouldn’t go down without a fight. Constructed of real, honest-to-God metal and chrome, it was practically an armored panzer. At least I had that in my favor.

But the freeway, or “the 405” as locals called it, proved too confining. Ordinary streets would offer me more maneuverability, so I put my left blinker on (as if hit men really pay attention to that sort of thing). Then I swerved right, allowing me to shoot off one of the exits, completely confusing Nigel. But not Carmine. He kept behind me, tucked in between a Beemer and a Saab convertible, holding steady.

“Recalculating.”

“Yeah, you do that, Nigel. Get us out of this mess!”

I hung a right at the end of the ramp, spotted some open road and let the big engine do its thing. I continued with a series of random turns with no idea where I was going.

“Left turn and continue one point five miles onto Whitmire.”

“Not now, Nigel,” I snapped.

Up ahead, a large delivery truck lumbered toward me in low gear. Carefully timing my speed, I skidded onto a side street. I’d seen Steve McQueen pull a similar move in Bullitt. The only problem was, when I did it, only about two-thirds of the Lincoln made it. The remaining third hopped the curb and took out a mailbox.

Nonetheless, the move allowed me to gain some distance from my pursuer. I took a hard left at the next crossing, this time throwing the car into a terrifying slide. Centrifugal force took control of the car until it hit a stubborn no-parking sign. The wheels continued to spin, shooting out gravel before finally catching and rocketing the car forward.

I didn’t seem to be in control of this metal beast. The beast was controlling me.

I zipped around the corner of the next street, again jumping the sidewalk and sending pedestrians scurrying for their lives. I whipped the car back and heard a loud snap as a light pole clipped the mirror on the passenger side, leaving an ugly tangle of wires.

Nigel, meanwhile, continued to spit out conflicting instructions: “Stay on Arcadia for one point three miles. Turn right on LaSalle. Recalculating.”

“Shut the hell up, Nigel!” I shouted.

“Turn left in one half mile onto Anzarro,” he said, totally ignoring me.

I veered onto a grimy sidewalk, pushing through a row of metal newspaper stands. Copies of free tabloids flew across my windshield like a flock of birds.

Still the 4Runner kept behind me.

Ahead I spotted something orange, a sawhorse with traffic cones next to it, blocking off the street ahead. Decision time. What would Steve McQueen have done? I gritted my teeth and ploughed through it in a blaze of construction orange.

So much for the Rolls Royce-style grill.

The SUV followed in my wake, flattening whatever was left. All I could do now was to snake through the inner city, hoping for some kind of miracle. Nigel, meanwhile, was strangely silent, perhaps from the violent contact with the barricade. From the corner of my eye, I noticed several alleyways. They were narrow, but just wide enough for one auto.

I picked one and turned into it. Carmine’s driver did the same. More gunshots and more panic. If a bullet hit a tire, I could careen out of control and crash. If one hit the gas tank, it would probably explode. And if it struck the back of my skull…well, that would explode too, and I would die in a Lincoln limo. Just like Kennedy.

A large intersection loomed ahead. The corner of Life and Death where Destiny crosses Fate. A stoplight hung there, and you can probably guess what color it was. A city bus lumbered toward the intersection, giving me one last, insane chance. I jammed hard on the gas pedal and the giant engine responded with every horse still available. I flew across the intersection amidst a chorus of honks, clearing the bus by inches.

Then, vehicular chaos.

In my rearview mirror, I watched the bus sideswipe the SUV and hit the brakes, setting off a string of other collisions. All of this seemed to take place in a second. Later I learned the bus catapulted the SUV through the front window of a muffler shop. The cars behind it couldn’t brake in time and piled one by one into each other, accordion style.

Meanwhile I kept driving straight ahead. All I wanted to do was put as much real estate as possible between the Lincoln and the crash site. The terrible cracking sound kept reverberating through my head along with the horrifying crunch of metal meeting metal.

After traveling several miles through normal traffic, I began to feel a little safer. That’s not to say all the panic was gone. So far this morning I managed to outrun a pair of hit men, dodge a half dozen bullets, race through some of meanest streets of L.A. and barely escape death. Yet at some point I would face the most daunting challenge of all.

Explaining to Mom what I’d done to her Black Beauty
